Have you noticed your dentures giving off an unpleasant odor? Maybe they are leaving a bad taste in your mouth? Your dentures are not supposed to smell or taste bad. If they do, it’s a sign you’re not cleaning them well enough. Here’s what’s behind the odor and how you can keep your breath minty fresh.
Bacteria Cause Smelly Dentures
Dentures look smooth and sleek, but they are actually porous. Food residue and plaque can get trapped in the small holes, causing an overgrowth of bacteria that can lead to odors. Not to mention, food residue and a biofilm can collect on your dentures during the day. If it isn’t removed regularly, your dentures can stink.
How to Keep Your Dentures Odor-Free
You don’t have to worry about any offensive odors when opening your mouth by committing to keeping your dentures clean. Here’s how you can keep foul odors at bay:
- Use the Correct Cleaning Products: Do not use toothpaste or abrasive dental products to clean your dentures because they can scratch them. Bacteria can get trapped in the small scratches. Instead, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a mild hand soap or dishwashing liquid to clean them.
- Brush Your Dentures After Eating: It’s best to brush your dentures after eating to remove food residue. If you can’t get to your toothbrush, rinse them with water.
- Brush Your Dentures At Night: Before you call it a night, remove your dentures and clean them well. Be sure to remove any adhesive, and don’t forget to clean your gums and tongue.
- Soak Your Dentures Overnight: Place your dentures in an overnight soaking solution to kill any remaining bacteria. It will also keep your dentures moist while you give your mouth a break.
- Visit Your Dentist Regularly: Schedule a dental checkup with your dentist every 6 months. Besides keeping your mouth healthy, they will also keep your dentures clean and fitting well to ensure they last their longest.
Never expose your dentures to harsh chemicals, including bleach. Do not boil them because it will cause them to warp and you’ll need a replacement sooner.
